Essential Oils are Cosmic Beings in a Bottle

When I was 16 I met my first Healer. I can’t recall the exact details but I believe I sold her a cup of coffee and admired her earrings. Later I saw that she was teaching a “Dancing the Chakras” workshop in her parlour for $10 and thought “sounds cool”.  Years later I met another woman who brought halloumi to a potluck and had a gorgeous alpaca blanket that she described as “the best 250 I ever spent. It goes with me everywhere. Would you like to touch it?” We hung out after that.

Maybe you find it surprising, maybe you don’t, but the most magical people I’ve ever met are generally walking around living pretty normal lives, do not have special dietary needs and have little-to-no interest in impressing others. Think “Oracle in the Matrix”. You know, baking cookies, hosting psychic awareness parties in their living room, casual smokers.

As I’ve traveled and lived around the world, Healers are people I just tend to meet. Sometimes because I have wanted their services and other times because maybe we both just shared a love of goat cheese and knitting. These are my people. We are, “low-key-vibe brain melters”. I recently had a client tell me that she could feel my fingers in her brain when I was working on her. I said that my fingers were not in her brain and she said, ‘yes they are’ and I left it at that. Brain melter had a fun ring to it.
There are a lot of things that I came into the world having an intuitive understanding of, and it never occurred to me that other people don’t. For example, I can simply look at a person and see what is up in their energy, emotions, energy level and much more. That is going to directly impact how I interact with them in the treatment room and the approach I take. Having studied a clinical therapy (and still busy with it), it has been fascinating and at times frustrating to look at how “chained to the evidence” the world still is. Don’t get me wrong, research and evidence are great and have legitimised many things and helped a lot of people. But there are limitations to what evidence and research can provide in the healing theatre.
One of the things I still find so attractive about using essential oils with people in their healing and awakening process is that… essential oils are basically beings in their own right. We have made a big study out of their chemical constituents and what they do in a more medical sense - which is valuable and I highly respect these contributions to the field. What I also find so glaringly obvious that it sometimes hurts my head is that essential oils are also working with people on a subtle, energetic level that, while the scientific community hasn’t yet figured out how to explain, if you work with them in a therapeutic setting, you just know this. You know that even if all you do is move the essential oils over a person’s body while doing energy work and never actually touch them, something happens that deeply impacts the receiver.
Books have been written about this. It’s starting to become more accepted in some circles. Salvator Battaglia has a chapter in his book, Aromatree called, “Reshamanizing Essential Oils” which I thought was a clever phrase. Even if you don’t know that that means, a part of you does. You know, looking at the fact that for thousands of years, Shamans have been using aromatic materials as healing tools on physical, emotional and spiritual-energetic levels. It’s in our ancestry, it’s in our inherited memory (which I know, science has proved ‘doesn’t exist’ but tell that to Jung). Before there were pills, there were low-key vibe “village-level brain melters” who blew aromatic smoke over your body and worked with your spirit to help you release, heal and accept your “now”.

When I come into my office and see all the bottles of Angelica, Bergamot, Hyssop, Helichrysum and on and on - I walk into a room full of “beings in a bottle”. I say, “howdy, great to be with you, let’s work today!” and I know that each essence has a particular frequency, knowledge and wisdom set and “flavour” of healing and wisdom it can impart. People ask HOW do I know this? I don’t know. How do other people NOT know it? I look, I feel, I sense, I use in practice, I sit with them, smell them, journal, read, ask etc. The larger spirit of Helichrysum is for me, golden, white, broad, shimmery. It helps to heal in cases of shock connected to childhood trauma, emotional trauma played out in physical ways, and can ultimately help us to accept our path in life with grace, determination and a child-like lightness of being. I mean, that’s all I know so far, after working with it for 6 years. I’m sure that’s a drop in the bucket but you know, these are cosmic beings vibrating to a frequency that can be roughly experienced on Earth via a plant extract, and I am a mere human at the moment - so I am doing my best to keep up.
It can be difficult to share about this stuff because: a. It sounds insane to most people and b. It may give the impression that safety and ethics ‘don’t matter’ when working with essential oils and you know, that’s just not true. Wipe some patchouli on your face and go stand in the sun. I mean, please don’t, not unless you want 2nd degree burns. Or, and I’m really serious here, rub peppermint on your hands and move them near an infant’s face and watch them stop breathing (except really don’t do that). No one ever said powerful cosmic beings don’t have real-world dangers. They do.
But at the same time, I would not like this area of knowledge to go entirely under the radar. It’s a ‘lost art’ that is coming back and speaking loudly to a growing number of us. When I have been through some of the worst of my own shock, trauma and recovery, it has been aromatic materials, applied consistently to my physical and energetic body that have gotten me through the periods in between appointments with whatever therapist I was working with. They have put a sense of “here’s what you can do for yourself right now” into my hands and frankly, helped me to rest, find peace and be in my body so that I could process my experiences when nothing else did.
I also think it’s something that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated, and with a practitioner that has real training and experience that you personally feel a resonance with.
Aromatic materials, especially when combined with energy work, massage (frankly any type of healing) offer another dimension to how we can help ourselves to heal, become more aware and evolve in our life path. I’m not really sure where I’d be without them in my own life, and I would surely love to help you discover what they can mean for you.
If you find this interesting, I invite you to get in touch. Let’s find out which cosmic beings in a bottle are speaking to you.
